Stimulated by the success encountered by the MAC fibre artists at the Toga art award and Telstra Art Award 2009, MAC has open 2010 with two beautiful fibre exhibitions.
Linda Sheahan Galleries at the Clifton School of Art (NSW) has celebrated the arrival of the New Year with Lena Yarinkura and Bob Burruwal. A two days fibre workshop was held under the attentive care of the two senior artists. Antipodes (VIC) has exhibited a delicate and vibrant fibre show featuring MAC emerging artists; amongst them the talented Sylvia Campion and Vera Cameron.
February in Perth will offer a special event with the long anticipated first solo show of Owen Yalandja. Seva Fragos Art will showcase the sculptural Yawk Yawks carvings created by the Kuninku artist.
In March, Short Street Gallery (Broome) will exhibit in a collaborative show works from the Maningrida senior and emerging artists.
Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi (Melbourne) will host a Maningrida fibre sculptures and carving survey. Artworks created by the MAC senior and emerging artists will animate the exhibition space and bring the stories of the Dreamtime to the heart of Melbourne.
As a special event Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi will also welcome in May the 2010 John Mawurndjul solo show. The Melbourne gallery will exhibit the latest works created by the recipient of the 2009 Melbourne Art Fair Foundation Visual Art award.
In March, Aboriginal and Pacific Art (Sydney) will offer a selective 2010 survey of the Maningrida bark paintings and hollow logs. For this special event, all the Maningrida senior artists will be present through their artworks.
In April, Hogarth Galleries will be welcoming their traditional Maningrida Survey. All the talent and skills of the new generation and senior artists will be showcased through a beautiful selection of fibre sculptures, fish traps, bark paintings and carvings.
June will offer the anticipated Don Djorlom and Sonia Namarnyilk show. Since the appearance of the artist at the 2009 Telstra Art Awards, many collectors have been enquiring about Don Djorlom’s works. Hogarth Galleries will have the pleasure to introduce the art lovers to the delicate talent of this couple.
May and June will be a special time for the Maningrida emerging artists. Mossenson Galleries -Indigenart in Perth and Melbourne will showcase new talents. The creative Aileena Lamanga, daugher of the late Jimmy Njiminjuma and sister of Irenie Ngalinba will hold her first solo show. The precise cross hatching and her freedom in the interpretation of the traditional stories is sure to seduce the fine art collectors.
Young and already well-known thanks to his presence in many group exhibitions and to his appearence at the 2006 and 2009 Telstra Art Award, Emmanuel Wurrkidj will have his first solo show at Birrung Galleries in Sydney. Nephew of John Mawurndjul, Emmanuel has been learning the art of painting from his uncle. His style is strong with a vibrant energy and intensity.
Winter will bring five beautiful shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Darwin.
In July Annandale Galleries in Sydney will offer a new perspective on the work of the senior Kuninjku artists Timothy Wulanjbirr, James Iyuna and Irenie Ngalinba. The opening of this exhibition will coincide with the opening of a monumental public artwork by the artist Irenie Ngalinba. More information will be reveled very soon on our web site.
In Melbourne, William Mora will showcase the diversity of the different clan groups living in Maningrida and 34 surrounding outstations.
Niagara Gallery will host the new Samuel Namunjda solo exhibition, and feature the most stunning pieces created by the artist since his previous solo show in 2008.
In August, MAC Darwin (32 Mitchell Street, Darwin city) will exhibit the new prints created by the Maningrida artists and will host the traditional MAC show showcasing senior and emerging artists.
Framed Gallery will hold a Lena Yarinkura and Bob Burruwal show. Original camp dogs and amazing fibre sculptures will bring magic into the exhibition space of the Darwin Gallery.
In September, Raft Artspace who recently moved to Alice Springs will offer central desert collectors an exhibition of bark paintings, carvings and hollow logs.
Michael Reid (Sydney) will exhibit for the second consecutive year the works of the winner of the Toga Art Award 2009 Anniebell Marrangamarrnga.
This year again, Maningrida Arts and Culture will keep on promoting and showcasing the excellence of the Eastern Arnhem Land artists overseas.
In Paris, from April to May, Gallery Luc Berthier will exhibit the works of the Maningrida artists.
London will welcome two significants shows. In June, Rebecca Hossack Gallery will offer a beautiful Yawk Yawk exhibition featuring works from the senior artists Anniebell Marrangamarranga, Marina Murdilnga, Frewa Bardaluna and Owen Yalandja. In October Jennifer Guerrini Maraldi will showcase a selection of Bark paintings, Hollow logs and Mimih Spirits.
For the first time, the Maningrida artists will have their works exhibited in China through an amazing public art project and a commercial exhibition held in Shanghai. More information very soon on "Event and News".
