| Wandurrk |
| Wandurrk along with his wife is the ancestral creator of the Gurrgoni group. After a long journey they Wandurrk and his wife rested at Kuyun, a sacred dreaming site where their remains are to be found today. Wandurrk and his kin are said to inhabit the country along the low escarpment bordering the Tomkinson river plains, where they live in houses made from the leaves of a small palm tree - Djangelle. They also gather food from the kentia palm - Aldjonduk. Wandurrk is an important figure in the mortuary ceremonies of the Gurr-goni. Jungul jungul, a feathered stick placed on the grave of the deceased represents Wandurrk. The figure has elongated ears indicating that he is not human but an ancestral spirit & his long ears are part of his dreaming & they are just like that. |
