Clayton Watson

Biography

Clayton Watson is a young Gurgoni and Kuninjku artist. He has been adopted by Owen Yalandja and Lena Wood and is learning under Yalandja’s guidance. He is interested in the stories about yawkyawk, specially Ngalkodjek Yawkyawk who reside in a billabong near his outstation, Barrihdjowkkeng. Yawkyawk or young spirit girls live in freshwater springs and billabongs and their shadows can occasionally be seen by humans who approach. They are girls from the Ancestral period who transformed into mermaid-like figures with fish tails and human upper bodies.
