Rita Mason

Biography

Rita Mason is from the Burarra language group. An estimate of a thousand burarra speakers in the Maningrida region. Rita has mastered weaving and traditional painting from a young age watching and learning from her family, her grandmother Kitty and father Jimmy Ngarlakun a painter.  Rita specialise in weaving large floor Mat , dillybags and traditional painting on bark and funeral log.

intrigued by her father artwork jimmy would tell his history stories through painting while teaching Rita to paint using natural ochres.

Rita is surrounded by family who have mastered pandanus weaving, her step grandmother winnie, mother Tracy.  Rita loves to weave as a form of meditation and remembers the hands of skilled old people that have passed on their knowledge.
